Description:

This is a rare, well-preserved copy of THE BORDER OUTLAWS, a fascinating and brilliantly illustrated volume chronicling the criminal careers of the Old West’s most-wanted bandits – the Younger Brothers Gang and the James Brothers, Frank and Jesse. It was published in 1882, the year Jesse James was gunned down in the parlor of his own house.

Issued as “two books-in-one,” both parts were penned by by prolific 19th-century author J.W. Buel, who was employed as a reporter for the Kansas City Press during the years that the James-Younger gangs were active. He met and interviewed many people personally connected to the events described in this book, including Cole Younger during his incarceration at the Minnesota State Prison. Buel himself was an eyewitness to Jesse James’ robbery of the Kansas City Fair in September, 1872.

Though ostensibly written as separate chronicles, the two books parallel each other in many respects, since the Younger Brothers and the James Boys shared similar histories, operated in the same territory, and frequently joined forces to commit robberies.

The James and the Youngers got their start as Confederate guerrillas or “bushwhackers” in Missouri. They rode with Charles Quantrell and his raiders and were present at the Lawrence, Kansas Massacre in August, 1863. After the South fell, these embittered rebels took the skills they learned in the war – raiding, murder and robbery – and redirected them towards trains, banks and any institution they perceived as belonging to “Radical Republicans.” Throughout their careers, and to this day, the Civil War has been cited as either justification or a poor excuse for their crimes.

This is a thorough account of the James-Younger gang, and all the variations thereof. It chronicles their audacious spree of bank, stage and train robberies and the cold-blooded murders they committed along the way. It tells of the getaways that made them legends in their own day, the foiled attempts of Pinkerton detectives to capture them, and more. And of course it delivers a fully detailed account of Jesse James’ own murder by the coward Robert Ford.

The color illustrations are beautiful and rendered in the sensational “dime novel” style of the period. You’ll find vivid antique depictions of “The Russellville Bank Robbery,” “The Hot Springs Stage Robbery,” “The Kansas City Fair Robbery” and many more. The book also includes illustrated portraits of Jesse James, “from photograph taken two hours after he was shot,” his brother Frank, the Younger Brothers and their associates in crime.

Of his work on the Younger Brothers, Buel writes in the Preface:

It can be truthfully said that the following history of these great outlaws contains a less number of errors and a more reliable and comprehensive description of their valorous deeds than any previous publication. For several weeks prior to the completion of this work, a correspondence was maintained with the Younger Brothers, as well also with the warden of the Minnesota penitentiary, and through this source many new facts were obtained and numerous errors discovered. In addition to this, personal interviews have been had with several old comrades of the Youngers, and with Cole Younger himself; and nothing has been left undone to procure all the facts possible …

For a considerable period the writer was a resident of Kansas City, where he was engaged in journalism, and made the acquaintance of hundreds of persons who were intimately known to the Younger and James Brothers, and from these also much valuable information was received, which various corroborative sources have enabled the author to reliably write the history of the noted outlaws without resorting to either fiction or romance..

Regarding his work on Jesse and Frank James he writes:

It has been my purpose for more than three years to prepare a true history of these noted outlaws, and during that time material has been collecting which is now given to the public entirely free from fulsome description or elaborated sensation. In the main essentials the James Boys themselves will confirm the truthfulness of this narrative, which has been written with a special regard for candor and indisputable facts only.

During several years of the most exciting period in the career of these noted bandits, I was engaged as a reporter for the Kansas City press, and not only became acquainted with many of their relatives and friends who reside in that section, from whom were obtained numerous facts and incidents never before published, but my duties as a journalist gave me many excellent opportunities to learn the real truth in regard to many of their most daring adventures, to one of which (the robbing of the cash-box at the Kansas City Fair) I was an eyewitness.

As time unfolds the mysteries which have gathered around the names of these desperate outlaws, it will be seen that this is the most faithful history of their exploits that has ever been presented to the public.
