Rare Russian Polish Art Nouveau Double Shell Silver Salt Cellar, 1874:
$312.26

This is a rareRussian silver double salt, each side modelled as a shell around a centralhandle. The piece is hallmarked for 1874, as shown, and was assayed in Warsaw, which was anImperial Russian office between 1852 and 1896. It bears the maker’s mark ofFryderyk Roever and an obscured assayers mark, most probably that of Josef (Osip)Sosnkowski. The salt measures 14cm wide and stands 9.5cm high, with a goodweight of around 5 Troy ounces. The lower edgeof the base is not quite straight so it does not sit perfectly, and one footmay have been reattached. Generally good.

Poland became an independent republic in 1918. In1795 was partitioned between Austria,Russia and Prussia. Napoleon restored Poland, but it was partitionedagain after 1815. The Eastern part of Poland belonged to the RussianEmpire. De facto Russiaannexed the country.

A perfectly exquisite present for Christmas. It is considerably tall for a salt-cellar, so it would look more of a centrepiece on your table.
