A fineSpanishcup hilt duelling rapier signed xxx TOMASO xx AYALA xxx circa late 1600\'s to 1700\'s.

Rapier may be one of the forgeries made during the period in order to increase profits and inspire confidence in thesuperiorquality of the the famous smith Tomas de Ayala. It is a truly beautiful piece and I have not seen many examples but one of the finest ones.

The hilt is in very good condition and its guard consistsof a cup hilt, two arms one on either side of the ricasso these attach to theinteriorof the cup hilt with two hand made screws. The forward quillon is bent forward and the rear quillon bends backwards with a knuckle guard and a oval shaped pommel which is marked on wither side with a hand symbol. The grip has a wire wrap with straight fourstraightiron supports.

Handle has a slight bend after research and speaking with several fencers I have discovered that this was done for the rapier to be used by a left handed person. Perhaps this was picked up andmodified.

The blade has a diamond cross section and is designed for penetration with a long narrow blade perfect for duelling. Around the middle of the blade there is a fuller on either side one reads \"xxx TOMASO xx AYALA xxx\" and the other \"xxx EN x TOLEDO xxx\" and a anchor symbol.The blade is in excellent condition and has a small section close to the pointwhichis slightly sharp.

The sword is extremely wellmade amazing piece which is still extremely sturdy.
