RARE STERLING SILVER CASTLE TOP CARD CASE OSBORNE HOUSE 1865:

This is a rare and superb antique sterling silver castle top card case made in Birmingham, England in 1865 likely by silversmith Colen Hewer Cheshire. The case has a rare, highly projecting relief depiction of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Osborne House was built 1845-1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer home and rural retreat.

The card case measures 3 7/8 in. (9.8 cm) in height, 2 3/4 in. (7.0 cm) in width and 1/2 in. (1.3 cm) in thickness. It weighs 69 grams (2.2 ozs. troy). It is fully hallmarked for sovereign, quality standard, city of origin, date and silversmith (C.C). The latter mark is likely for Colen Hewer Cheshire, although records showthat this silversmithregistered his mark later than 1865.

The card case is in very good condition; there aresmall bumps to two corners and minute separations at the top and bottom of the vacant cartouche. These items to do not in any way detract from the beauty of thisrare piece.
