RARE! STUNNING PAUL FLATO COMPACT w/ FINE RHINESTONES ON GOLD & BLACK ENAMEL

This superb PAUL FLATO compact is one of the most elegant and sought-after styles of his many beautiful and unique pieces. It comes in several different backgrounds and different colored stones. The hardest to find is this one, with a glossy black enamel, a fabulous gold-washed overlay in a floral motif and flashing and sparkling with ten large glittering faceted rhinestones. Made in the 1940s, it remains in superb condition both inside and out. If you collect Paul Flato compacts or simply love their look, this one will be the star of any collection of Flato compacts. It is featured in several vintage compact books and I have included a photo from one of them. It shows the same compact as the one I\'m offering, but with a gold background rather than black and different colored rhinestones. I love that one too, but you don\'t get the fabulous contrast as you do with this black and gold style.

It measures 2 1/2\" by 2 1/4\" and has a good heavy weight. The black enamel is in excellent condition, with no wear at all. Over this is the gorgeous cut-out gold-washed decorative cover that has a lovely curving design in a floral style. Inset into the gold are the ten very large and clear bezel-set rhinestones, beautifully bright and in wonderful condition. All the stones are of an even clarity and stand quite high off the surface of the lid, allowing a lot of light to strike them and pick up brilliant color from surrounding light.

The sides and back are all black enamel with just a tiny bit of normal wear on the back. No scratches,dents or dings. The hinge is in alternating black and gold and is nice and tight. The gold clasp opens smoothly and snaps tightly closed.

Inside, the mirror is just slightly hazed from prolonged closure and is very usable. The gold-washed tri-level frame is in excellent condition. Below, the powder lid shows just minimal wear and has no scratches or dents. It\'s marked FLATO on the lower right-hand corner. The clasp closes tightly. The underside of the lid is brushed gold and the base of the powder well glows with a beautiful gold-washed finish. The sides are lined with soft ivory suede-like fabric.

A compact like this comes around very rarely. It\'s an elegant and sophisticated piece and has all the quality and fine styling that Paul Flato\'s exquisite creations are famous for!
