To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its immensely popular Natura Gold series, the South Africa Mint has released this special 2011–2013 Tenth-Ounce Gold Nature’s Families 3-Piece set. In 2011 the mint introduced the world to “Nature’s Families.”
The coins depict stunning frosted and mirrored proof images of some of Africa’s most legendary wildlife. The 2011 gold proof portrays a meerkat in an old tree searching for termites and larvae. A typical meerkat diet consists of worms, crickets, grasshoppers, small rodents, lizards, small snakes, birds, eggs, fruit and ant larvae. Meerkats also love to eat poisonous scorpions and appear to be resistant to many deadly types of venom. The 2012 proof shows a female painted wolf. The oldest female and oldest male have alpha status over their offspring and siblings. Typically only the alpha pair breeds and after a gestation period of two and a half months, a litter of seven to fourteen pups are born. They remain underground in the burrow for the first two months of their lives. The pups are the center of attention and all pack members take part in caring for, feeding and protecting them. The 2013 gold proof features two zebras at a watering hole. All three proofs are protected in stout numismatic capsules and the set comes in a custom-engraved wood case with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity.
