All sell !ITEM: This is a very rare, vintage and original July-August 1945 issue of \"What\'s New\" magazine. A publication which promoted the public relations interests of Abbott Laboratories, a leading pharmaceutical and medical technology company based out of Chicago, Illinois. During the Great Depression and particularly during World War II, tax law changes gave corporations huge incentives to begin investing in the arts so as to avoid the appearance of high profits. Many organizations used this status as \"patron of the arts\" to improve the public\'s perception of them. Abbott Labs in particular got behind many of the era\'s most important WPA, Modernist, and Regionalist artists and tailored their own promotional efforts to this visual style. In \"What\'s New,\" Abbott Laboratories showed their patriotic stripes by offering their thematic cover illustrations to the OWI for war poster usage and the interior featured photomontages, illustrations, and strong, oftentimes haunting, graphic design that pertain to the war and the medical industry\'s place in it. This issue features cover design by Joseph Hirsch titled, \"Company in the Parlor.\" Described inside the magazine: \"The gaunt stone walls of an Italian farmhouse provide scant shelter for a front-line Battalion Aid Station, but they do screen the activities of the missing farmer\'s uninvited guests from the sharp eyes of enemy artillery spotters. Still under fire, the medics perform their duties with complete disregard for their own safety. Their only precaution seems to be to have the man at the left keep his binoculars trained on enemy guns and their targets of the moment. The parlor wall shrine makes an excellent medicine cabinet for drugs and antiseptics.\"We have come into a fascinating collection of these World War II-era magazines, all in spectacular condition, and will continue to offer them in the coming months.Measures 9 3/4\" x 12 1/2\" with 32 Fine+ condition with only very minor binding wear. Issue is complete with no cut or missing pages.Guaranteed to be 100% vintage and original from Grapefruit Moon Gallery.
