Parshall, Gussie Belle

Gray County, Kansas1908 -1923. About a total of 230 snapshot photos. One album with an extensive manuscript narrative, theother with some manuscript captions. GussieBelle Parshall created these photo albums to preserve the memories of herfamily’s years farming in Gray County Kansas. A fascinating look at life on anearly twentieth century southwest Kansas family farm. Oblong albums measure 7-1/2” x 10” x 1-1/4” inches, and 6” x 8” x 1-1/2” inches. The larger size album spans 1909 to 1923 andcontains over 160 black and white photos with some captions. The smaller album spans 1917 to 1921 andcontains extensive manuscript captions with about 70 black and whitephotos. Photo size is mostly about4-1/4” x 2-1/2” with some exceptions. These original photos are a mixture of prints and trimmed down realphoto postcards (RPPC). There are some duplicates between the two albums, oftena print in one case, and a RPPC of the same image in the other. Captions are handwritten in white pencil onthe black album pages in a legible hand.Album pages are aging, and somewhat fragile, mostly at the their fold. The firstthree page of the smaller album are detached and laid in, and there is a about ten pages with a 1/2\" wide gnaw or burn at the edge. These antique photos are mostly mountedwithout paste by corner mounts and many can be easily removed, however some arepasted at the corners. Some corner mounts are loose. There are a few missing photos, and a few loose laid in. A center cord is broken on the larger album, and the smalleralbum should have its ties loosened for viewing, and or supported in a cradleto minimize bending of pages. Covers are about good with age and wear. These photos are amateur snapshot photos, soexposure, focus, etc, varies. Antique photos may have some surface wear, age, or dust. Some ofthe photos are light (either aged or original exposure), a few have an orangepeel effect on the image surface. A rare, and encompassing archive of images withmanuscript captions from a Gray County, Kansas, family farm from mostly beforethe 1920’s.
