Rarely seen 1787 Hester Bateman crested Georgian sterling silver marrow scoop:

We are listing this very interestingly crested and double monogrammed rarely seen 1787 Georgian sterling silver marrow scoop by the world famous female London silversmith Hester Bateman (arguably the best known silversmith of all time). Marrow scoops are one of the more rarely seen pieces of specialized silver used by the Georgian gentry - in this case to scoop the marrow out of bones (when that was a great delicacy), and crested and monogrammed marrow scoops by the great Hester Bateman are very rarely seen. The scoop is incised on the back of its larger bowl with an unusual slightly worn crest of a squirrel sejant cracking a nut, which is usually associated with the Lovell family, who were very well known for several centuries in the Norfolk area (their red squirrel symbol can still be seen in a stained glass window of the ancient Church of Peter and Paul in East Harling). The scoop is also incised with a possibly associated ornate cursive monogram below the crest (possibly the original owner\'s?) which I have shown from both directions, as well an additional ornate cursive monogram toward the tip of the bowl which was later added by a subsequent owner. The scoop is marked on the back of its handle (the flat area between the two bowls) with a lion passant, crowned leopard\'s head, the date letter m (used in 1787-1788), and the iconic cursive HB maker\'s mark. This mark was registered in 1778 by London silversmith Hester Bateman (see page 78 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). The scoop is almost 9 inches long, weighs 1.7 ounces, it is very interestingly crested and double monogrammed, and it is in very good condition. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the scoop has not been professionally polished). A very rarely seen piece of interestingly crested and double monogrammed Georgian silver by the world renowned Hester Bateman.
