Background == First published in 1970, Rommel DrivesOn Deep into Egypt, a collection of eighty-five poems primitive poemsfull of the innovation, wit, style and anti-intellectualism that became a signaturethat only Brautigan could achieve. Often imitated, never duplicated wasBrautigan\'s sixth collection of poetry; his eighth poetry book publication. Thetitle of the book echoes a 1942 San Francisco Chronicle headline describing asuccessful operation by Rommel during the North African Campaign of World WarII. RobertNovak wrote in Dictionary of Literary Biography that \"Brautigan iscommonly seen as the bridge between the Beat Movement of the 1950s and theyouth revolution of the 1960s.\" A so-called guru of the sixtiescounterculture, Brautigan wrote of nature, life, and emotion; his uniqueimagination provided the unusual settings for his themes. Critics frequentlycompared his work to that of such writers as Thoreau, Hemingway, Barthelme, andTwain.” Richard Brautigan died in 1984 at age 49.


Brautigan visitedRoxy and Judy Gordon in Austin, Texas, in August 1970. Whilethere he was issued a Texasfishing license (August 14, 1970). It notes his height (6\'4\") and weight(165 pounds).


The poem\"Autobiography (Polish It like a Piece of Silver),\" collected inLoading Mercury with a Pitchfork, contains a reference to Judy Gordon andByrds, a town in central Texas, near Brownwood. Two poems,\"A Study in Roads\" and \"Stone (real,\" both collected inJune 30th, June 30th contain references to Bee Caves,Texas, a small town twelve miles west of Austin. Brautigan mayhave visited Bee Caves with the Gordons. Roxy Gordon, inturn, dedicated his book, Some Things I Did (Austin, Texas: The Encino Press,1971) to RICHARD BRAUTIGAN.



MORE ABOUT == Richard Gary Brautigan (January 30, 1935 – ca. September 16, 1984) was an American novelist, poet, and short story writer. His work often employs black comedy, parody, and satire. He is best known for his novels Trout Fishing in America (1967) and In Watermelon Sugar (1968). Brautigan began his career as a poet, with his first collection being published in 1957. He made his debut as a novelist with A Confederate General from Big Sur (1964), about a seemingly delusional man who believes himself to be the descendant of a Confederate general. Brautigan would go on to publish numerous prose and poetry collections until 1982. He committed suicide in 1984.
