Description

Richard Ridgely, member of the Contintental Congress, document signed ?R Ridgely,?concerning the payment of a debt to him by Philip Graybill, a legal client,March 10, 1787, 4 by 8 inches, in excellent condition (given its age). Traditionally at this time legal documentswere written by clerks so I am assuming that only the signature by Ridgely isby him. On the back of the document aretwo additional signed legal receipts of payments received fromGraybill by unknownpeople.

Documents from members of the Continental Congress are not commonly found in the market. This particular document comes from the estate of George and Helen Sanders, who founded The Sanders Autograph Price Guide. They kept files of autographs to verify signatures. It is likely that one of them wrote ?Continental Congressman? in pencil beneath Ridgely?s signature.

The ContinentalCongress met from 1774 to 1789. During thattime, only 433 people were elected to represent their states. For whatever reasons, 343 attended and 90 didnot attend any of the meetings. RichardRidgely was elected in 1784 and 1785 as a delegate from Maryland but never attendeda meeting. Despite not attending he is still recognizedas a member in United States history.

According to theBiographical Directory of the United States Congress, Richard Ridgely (1755 ?1824) was a Delegate tothe Continental Congress from Maryland; born in Queen Caroline Parish, AnneArundel County, Md., August 3, 1755; attended St. John?s College, Annapolis,Md.; assistant clerk of the council of safety in 1776, and later clerk; studiedlaw; was admitted to the bar in 1780 and commenced practice in Baltimore;advocate in the Maryland Court of Chancery; elected a Member of the ContinentalCongress in 1784 and 1785, but did not attend; served in the state senate1786-1791; resumed the practice of law in Baltimore; appointed judge of thecounty court July 30, 1811, which position he held until his death in HowardCounty, Md., February 25, 1824; interment on the ?Dorsey Hall? estate, nearColumbia, Howard County, Md.
