An outstanding, originalletter and envelopewith cartoonsketches, signed Ronald Searle to his love interest, Ruth Cyril. The letter, 8\" wide and 10\" high, is in good, original condition with a slight tear on the edge at the fold. It is both typed and hand-written in London in 1959 and written in what Searle describes as \"arachnoid handwriting\" with sketches on both sides...it leads off with \"Yes it is - it\'s me. Head bowed, bloody, etc. Sackcloth & ashes.\" and the four sketches running diagonally down the top left shows a mustached character in sackcloth with a red heart, very sad, then on his knees with large ears and finally in the form of a rat with red ears. At the bottom of the second page shows a character with red heart carrying a satchel and walking awayunder the gaze of lovely, black eyes, and at the end a red heart with an arrow through it, signed Love R. The text is both pleading for inexcusable delays in writing and complaining about his unbelievable work schedule...16 hours a day, flights, trip for LIFE to cover the 1959 refugee camps where he will spend a month, changing camps each day. Searle, considered the greatest satirical cartoonist of the 20th Century, takes the lucky reader on aroller coaster ride of emotions, frustration in the typed portion to desire in the \"spidery scrawl\" that is his handwriting. He had met the lovely Cyril (Ruth Cyril 1938-1988) in Paris in 1958 while attending her successful exhibition at the prestigious A LA GRAVURE...he purchased an etching and apparently was smitten by the demure beauty (Searle was regarded by the French as a major art critic). Included in this lot, besides the letter and envelope, is the torn matchbook coverfrom the \"Rendezous Plaza\" in New York, which served as a \"delicious\" evening as part of their romantic interlude (his ability to form romantic thoughts in a letter was wonderful!). This is #7 of a lot of 27 separate offerings of Searle\'s letters to Cyril over a period from 1958 to 1961, all on this site as soon as possible. The letters are part of a larger lot of correspondence to Cyril from major, European notables (Jacques Villon, Stanley William Hayter, Charles Delaunay, Jean Rouch and more) that carried on lifelong correspondence...all will be offered at the earliest convenience. These are a part of the estate of the late Marian Ostrovsky Bernstein (noted NY photographer), and sister of the Atelier 17 artist, Ruth Cyril. A large number of Cyril\'s artworkis currently and will be offered on this site, many in the oversized category. I have provided enough photos of this letter that you won\'t have any trouble with the content...a little bit of work to decipher the handwriting, but well worth the effort....Happy Hunting!!
