20TH CENTURY COLLECTABLES...TOMORROW\'S EXPENSIVE ANTIQUES AT TODAY\'S AFFORDABLE PRICES DescriptionAMUSING ROYAL DOULTON SMALL JUG IN THE MUCH-COLLECTED \'GALLANT FISHERS\' SERIES
FISHERMAN CHARACTER LYING BY RIVER WITH PICNIC HAMPER AND DRINK - \" WHEN THE TIMROUS TROUT I WANT TO TAKE...\"Date:Produced1913-1936

If you are not familiar with Royal Doulton\'s \'The Gallant Fishers\' we hope our images convey the charm and light-heartedness of this very collectable Early 20th Century themed seriesBased on Izaak Walton\'s \'The Compleat Angler\' first published in 1653, the series depicts combinations of fishermen in 17th century dress with various quotations and willow tree borders.

There were six characters and three quotations embraced by the range and we are offering a small Tudor-influence/Art Nouveau style pinchneck jug, which features a \'Fisher\' character seen lying on the bank of a river with picnic hamper and drink to hand. The quotation around the inside of the jug just below the rim reads: \"When the timrous trout I wait to take...\". It is from a longer quotation that goes on to add: \"...and he devours my bait.\"

DETAIL

  • The jug carries the special Royal Doulton England \"The Gallant Fishers\' back stamp.
  • It stands 4.75in/12cm tall from the top of the handle and it weighs just 250gm.
  • The range was launched in 1913 and withdrawn in the mid 1930s so this jug could be anywhere from 80 to 100 years old and close to formally qualifying as a genuine antique. Given its age, it is in remarkably good condition, just a small chip to the underside of the base (see image 9 - chip to rim to the left of the back stamp) a closed hairline that runs vertically from the rim and can be seen inside too (see images 7/8). Otherwise the only other imperfection is the common aged-related crazing in the glaze.
We think this is a little gem of a find which still displays incredibly well in spite of its minor scars from a long life as our photographs demonstrate.

About Us

This COLLECTORLINKS shop is run by Gill Jefferson and husband John, who live in Yorkshire, England.

it has developed out of a shared passion for 20th Century Design and in particular the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods and the exciting so-called \'Retro\' period of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

We are enthusiastic collectors and everything we sell has been hand-picked by ourselves at sales and car boots etc based on its appeal and interest and current trends in collectables.

Unfortunately, we cannot keep everything that takes our fancy and that is when it is listed on . It has been reassuring to discover that what we find and like has an appeal to many other people all over the World and creates a useful link for collectors.

We hope you enjoy ing with us and that you\'ll keep an eye on our shop because it is constantly changing and there will always be interesting things to see and buy!
