It does not effect the use of the plate.There are a total of: 4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates, 5 bread & butter plates & 4 cups & saucers.This china was used once, then put away in the cloth carriers with separators (as shown in photos). The carriers\' sides have white metal. There is no lining in the bottom, but I use some of the separaters. This is to be handled with care anyway. The carriers also come with this deal.There are no nicks, chips or scratches. Retail cost for this discontinued china from Replacements, Inc. would be about $339.00.
