20TH CENTURY EXCELLENCE...GENUINE ANTIQUES AT TODAY'S COLLECTABLE PRICES
DescriptionROYAL DOULTON DUTCH HARLEM SERIES WARE 14PC COFFEE SET CREATED BYCHARLES NOKE
DELIGHTFUL CAMEO IMAGES OF COASTAL FOLK AND SCENESSET ON BRIGHT GREEN AND CREAM BACKDROPDate: Early 20th Century (1904-1922)

If you are not familiar with Royal Doulton's 'Dutch Harlem' we hope our images convey the charm and sheer beauty of this very collectable early 20th Century themed seriesCharles Noke is the man associated with creating the concept of 'Series Ware' atthe turn of the century...a themed pattern that can be applied to a whole range of pottery and thus offering a great range of choice for collectors. This 'Dutch Harlem' series is one of the most collectable, with its wonderful images of Dutch coastal folk and sailing ships (we've tried illustrate most of them in our images) all set on a bright hand-painted green and cream backdrop. It was (and still is)so popular that a version of it was produced for London's famous Liberty Store. It was produced between 1904 and 1944, and the backstamp suggests this particular set was manufactured between 1904 and 1922 (see image 5), so it's around 100 years old and qualifies for official antique status. The set comprises a coffee pot, cream jug, sugar bowl and fivecoffee cups/cans and saucers. There is also a large 'serving' plate, which we've included for use as a tray for the coffee pot or a cake/biscuit plate. It came with the rest of the set from a private owner and, if not intended originallyas a serving plate, may have been used as a stand for another item which had been broken?NOTE: A large water jug/pitcher in the same series and from the same source is listed seperately. The adjectives 'stunning' and 'rare' tend to be overused on , but we make no apologies for applying both to this set.

DETAIL
(all measurements are approx and more detail can be provided if requested)

The coffee pot stands 7.25in/18.5cm tall tothe top of the lid, with a lip to lip diameter of 2.75in/7cmand a capacity of 1pint/ 600ml.The cream/milk jug is 3.5 in/9cm tall with a handle to spout measurement on 2.75in/7cm.The sugar bowl is 2.75in/7cm wide from rim to rimThe height of each cup/can is 2.25in/5.5cm and the diameter of the saucers is 4in/10 cm.The large 'serving plate' measures 10in/25.5cm x 9in/22.5 cm.The total weight is:1.95kgCondition? In spite of its age, the whole set is in remarkably good condition with the colours still bright and as far as we can tell it's free from chips or cracks. For the benefit of absolute accuracy, we have noticed two tiny white specs on the rims of two of the cups; we think one is where the decorator's brush missed, because it's under the glaze, and the other, on the inner rim, may be the same or a small graze (see image 17).Otherwise, the only imperfections seem to be a spec of firing grit in the glaze here and there and the inevitable age-relatedcrazing, which we would regard as light and as the images show, doesn't detract from the display quality of this gorgeous set.
We regard this is a very rare find. There is a voracious appetite on for individual pieces of 'Dutch Harlem' which are isted all the time, but you'll have to search hard to find a set like this anywhere else.

About Us

This COLLECTORLINKS shop is run by Gill Jefferson and husband John, who live in Yorkshire, England.

it has developed out of a shared passion for 20th Century Design and in particular the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods and the exciting so-called 'Retro' period of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

We are enthusiastic collectors and everything we sell has been hand-picked by ourselves at sales and car boots etc based on its appeal and interest and current trends in collectables.

Unfortunately, we cannot keep everything that takes our fancy and that is when it is listed on . It has been reassuring to discover that what we find and like has an appeal to many other people all over the World and creates a useful link for collectors.

We hope you enjoy ing with us and that you'll keep an eye on our shop because it is constantly changing and there will always be interesting things to see and buy!
