Fresh out of an early Maine estate collection.
Lot of four (4) French Maps - WW1.Carte Taride Pour Cyclistes et Automobilistes - Est de la france, Section Nord, No. 6;Eat de la France, Sections Sud, No. 10; Centre de la France, Section Sud-Ouest, No. 16; Bretagne, Section Sud.No. 91. Light/even toning on linen backs, most maps show notations (WW1), three signed Maj Waugh, Personal Property. Else tight and bright, linen backed maps, paperinlays. Sizes vary slightly,approximately 30 x 35 inches.
The prior owner. Maj Waugh, graduated from the USMA in 1905. In 1910, he crossed Alaska by dog sled and his writings on cold weather gear and survival were used by the US Army to develop guidelines for the conditions. He served ascartographer (and, is alleged, a spy) during WW1. In later life he was anotable big game hunter and is noted as taking the largest Bengal Tiger recorded. A very nice set of WW1 era maps with period notations.
