STUNNING ANTIQUE American Folk Art Antebellum Portrait of a Child with Doll-WOW:
$1285.00

THIS IS THE REAL-DEAL! This is NOT a copy or reproduction.

I JUST UPLOADED NEW, HI-RES PICTURES 10-20-14. THEY SHOW QUALITY AND CONDITION BETTER THAN PRIOR PICS. LOVELY AND HAUNTING!!!

Is the scene over her shoulder the sun rising, the sun setting, or the burning of Atlanta? I don\'t know. Riveting!

I recently acquired what I believe to be a rare and charming antique American primitive folk art portraitof a child with her doll, oil on board, from the mid-nineteenth century, from a reputable Upstate New York sale. It may be painted on board or canvas applied to board, I don\'t know.

This is a stunning work with an adorable child holding a doll. What charm and presence she has! Her hair style, dress, and overall charming appearancemake me think this is mid-nineteenth century. It has spectacular color for its age.It is unsigned, as most primitives are. The back hasinventory numbers written and stenciled on it.The frame is 24.5” wide x 30.25” high, and the painting itself is 18.5”wide x 24” high.

I don’t think the frame is original to the piece. The frame has some condition challenges, and the painting itself has a fewblemishes, but nothing that mars the beauty and impact of the work. The frame and painting are selling \"As Is.\" The pictures tell the entire story! All sales are final.

The shipping rate reflects what it will take to ship this fragile work of art.

*The necklace around this girl\'s neck:You’ve probablyseen the necklaces dozens of times without noticing them. I have. Thesebeautiful single string coral necklaces worn by Regency ladies escaped myattention until my friend and blogging partner on Jane Austen Today, Laurel Annof Austenprose, sent mesome spectacular images, such as the one of Lady Maria Hamilton, who died in1814 unmarried. Coral has enjoyed a long and ancient tradition, first worn as atalisman and later for its color and beauty. One of my favorite drawings byPeter Paul Rubens depicts his son with a coral necklace. At the time coral wasthought to protect the wearer.

The tradition ofgiving children coral necklaces continued through the 19th century, as shown inthis detail of a late 18th century John Hoppner painting of one of theSackville girls. The gemstone was considered a guardian of sorts, protectingchildren from illnesses like stomachaches, fever, typhus, smallpox, andrickets. The mala beads were polished to a smooth sheen and matched in color.Bead sizes could be similar or gradated from small to larger stones that werestrung in the center. style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Dear dionysus*nyc,How do u know this is American? Is thepainting done on canvas or board? Was the frame with it when u bought it?Thanks!

Hi *******! Thankyou for your interest in my item. Theseare very good questions. I believe thepainting is American because of its ownership track. It came from a reputable estate sale inUpstate New York from an estate of a family with continuous generations in thesame house since the early nineteenth century.Although it is possible they could have imported it, it is far morelikely that it was a family member painted in mid-nineteenth century NewYork. It was sold with another paintingof an older woman that had 1863 written on the back of it. I never thought for a moment that either ofthese paintings were not family members.I ran this work past Sotherby\'s and Skinner sales, and neither ofthem seemed to have a problem with me thinking it was American. Neither refuted it.

I thought it was painted on board because it has a boardback, but the high-def photos I took show a material cross-weave under thepaint making me believe it was painted on canvas that was glued on board (whichwas VERY common at that time). It is notstretched canvas on a wood stretcher.

The frame was on the painting when I bought it. It very well may be that the frame isoriginal to the piece, but I would have thought that the painting from that erawould have had a less-gilded frame. Thepainting itself is in excellent shape but the frame needs a bit more work, inmy opinion. I find most people likethings pre-restored, so I did not have the frame restored.

This is an extraordinary piece of art. I think this little girl is magical, reachingout through time with charm and grace.Thank you, again, for your interest.
