An elegant and very desirable Georgian Burgundy ewer, made c.1780 in the classical taste in Old Sheffield Plate. It is of elegant form, with egg and dart moulding, the handle being in the form of an Adam-style urn. The inside is attractively and characteristically tinned.
Condition: no visible dents, breaks, restoration or resilvering, and has the attractive hints of pink characteristic of Old Sheffield. There is a small area of slight wear next to the handle, visible in the 2nd and 3rd photos, which is hardly noticeable when displayed. There is a very slight lean to the front - it may have always been like this since it was made and if wished may be adjusted with a small piece of card under the front of the base. Dimensions: Height 22cm; Length10cm (measured from handle to spout); Width 8cmOld Sheffield plate consists of sheets of solid silver fused to copper. Each item is hand made. It is completely different from the later electroplate process, where pieces are mass produced in a factory, then dipped in a bath of liquid silver using an electric process.
