ANTIQUE FRENCH RUSTIQUE CHIC CANDLE LANTERN c1850 ORIGINAL TIMEWORN PAINTPlease scroll down for more pictures.Dating from the mid 1800s this is a gorgeous antique French rustique candle lantern.
I have left it just as I found it with its original timeworn saffron colour paint that is distressed with the passage of time.
Both sides have delicieux cutwork designs in a cross pattern.
The back has a strong carrying handle and also a sleeve for the lantern to be pole mounted.
The hanging ring at the top is also good and strong.
The door opens and closes well. One hinge is damaged but the closing clip keeps the door firmly in place.
Whatever was in the door is long gone. I am not sure it was glass as this lantern came with a couple more that I am keeping for myself and they seem to have a thin layer of horn in them.
The door could be re-glazed or if the lantern is for use inside it does not detract as it would show the candle inside perfectly.
The inner has a curled sleeve to hold the candle in place.
