Vested with the ideal attributes of Baule concepts of beauty, (stylized coiffure, a light skin, painted high arched brows, keloid scarifications, the perfect oval face, a long ringed neck, perky breasts and youthful symmetric body), this carved wooden female figure is a contemporary version of the famed Baule blolo bla. The Baule peoples believe that everyone has a spouse in his or her previous existence who can affect good or bad fortune. This figure represents a man’s wife in the other world who, like his wife in this world, must not be neglected. Men and women keep their otherworld spouses in shrines and honor and propitiate them.
Notes on the Scaasi Collection: The bulk of the collection was put together in the 1970\'s from galleries in the New York area while the collector was living in Greenwich Village. His collecting continued over the years though with a piece added here and there through till the mid to late 1990’s. No documentation exists, the information is from family members
