- A large antique C19th ( possibly earlier), handcarved solid oak i.e. treen wall-hanging Folk Art mask of the Green Man measuring 16 ins (450 mm) high x 13.75 ins (355 mm) wide x 1 in (25 mm) thick. He is very deeply carved with the face, hair and beard in the form of acanthus leaves and with an open mouth showing teeth. The reverse of the carving is smooth with a sturdy brass wall-hanging ring at the top. The surface of his nose feels smooth and worn where it appears to have been rubbed over a long period of time and the back shows signs of where it may have been hung on an outside wall. The carving is in very good condition overall with lovely colour and patination although the bottom left acanthus leaf has broken off at some time and been re-attached (only really noticeable from back of carving). None of this detracts from this heavy and beautifully carved representation of the Green Man which makes a very unusual and striking display.
