SUPERB Rare Early Antique SE Persian Tribal AFSHAR \"Masnad\" (Throne/Cushion) Rug:
$1500.00

Special, Rare, Early Antique AFSHAR Tribal \"Masnad\" Tent Rug, SE Persia, Kerman Province, Sirjan or Aqta\' region, 3rd quarter of the 19th century (1850-1875), and coming in rather good overall original condition for its early antique age. The exact size is: 2\'-9\" x 3\'-6\" (84 x 107 cm). This sweet little tent rug is called a \"Masnad\" (throne cushion cover) by Farsi-spoken weavers. It is a personal weaving in every respect, being created only for special occasions and particular individuals. Diminutive rugs like this specimen were only used to be spread out in the best location in a reception room or in a khan\'s tent. In elite homes, whenever special guests and visitors arrived, the oldest and most respected elders were immediately ushered in and seated on a \"masnad\". In the Western rug literature, the field motifs are called \"shields\", yet among the Afshar, it is known as \"demon head\". The pattern actually originates from the floral palmettes found in classic Persian carpets of yore. I have conservatively dated this piece to the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. It could easily be circa 1850, or even earlier. This rug was created by a pastoral/nomadic weaver using a ground loom. It has a symmetrical knot structure on natural cotton warps and mixed wool wefts dyed red and blue. Twelve different natural, plant-derived, dye lot colors were used in the design pool with the field ground being natural white wool that has antiquated to ivory. Clean and collection or display ready. This superbly drawn example will make a very nice authentic antique Persian tribal textile art wall hanging display in your home or your office. Ifyou have any questions about this Afshar \"masnad\" rug, feel free to email or call Michael Phillips = (search the internet for my phone # and address as no longer allows me to place this vital information in my listing texts to personally and privately answer any and all pertinent questions from discerning buyers).
