SUSANNE FISHER (b. 1903) was the first West Virginian to sing in the Metropolitan Opera. She made her debut in the title role of "Madame Butterfly" on Dec. 26, 1935. She studied at Juliard and once gave a command performance for Adolph Hitler at the Berlin Opera, but fled Germany when the Nazis came to power. As Miss Fisher said, "It seemed that everywhere I went, political trouble followed in Europe. I was scheduled for a grand tour in Spain when the Spanish revolution broke out and it was cancelled. Then I returned to the United States and everything was wonderful." She spent many years singing at the Met in New York.

8" x 10" photo, dated 11-9-35 on the reverse, promoting her first-ever radio appearance on the Magic Key of RCA program. Excellent condition light overall wear.
