An example of MORRIS\' PATENT COMBINATION BENCH PLANE by the Sandusky Tool Company, Sandusky, Ohio. This innovative scissor fence plow was patented on March 21, 1871 by Ellis H. Morris of Canton, Ohio. Writing in Patented Transitional and Metallic Planes in America, author Roger K. Smith notes that it is uncertain who manufactured these planes; however, the presence of a Sandusky cutting iron and the fact that the other Morris Patent planes were made by Sandusky makes it very likely that they were produced by that maker. This example differs from those shown in the Smith books, Volume 1 and Volume 2 in that it has a rosewood handle and wedge, rather than beech, and lacks the screw locking mechanism on the side of the wedge. This plane has three steel rods soldered to the V-shaped fence that were almost certainly added as reinforcement at the factory owing to complaints from customers about the fragility of the delicately cast fence. A rare and graphic plow plane of uncertain origin. Length = 9.50 Inches (Ref. Id No.: 317303) [S-14273]
