Seller: Alley-Antiques

DESCRIPTION: Victorian Furniture. Scarce early Victorian table top pole screen. These screens were used on a table between a lady and the fireplace. A Victorian ladies make-up was made using wax. Heat from the fireplace would soften and melt ladies make-up, so these type of pole screens were invented to help block the heat. Today these are beautiful and very decorative. Most are floor model pole screens. This is a scarce table top model with a beaded and embroidered scene. Wood is solid walnut. The ripple border on the frame dates this to the 1850s or so.Original wavy glass which made this hard to photograph. It looks to be a paper punch picture. The framed screen is embroidered and beaded. The central scene is an embroidered St. Charles Spaniel on a pillow. It is very delicate and fragile. The pole is doweled in place. It could be adjustable (up and down) IF the thumb screw was replaced. Thumb screw is lacking (pic #6). Condition is fair for age. This is over 100 years old. This items is delicate and the beads are heavy, so it is not perfect. There is small losses and tears on border margin area (pic #7 shows one area). Some beads are lacking (especially large white beads on the right upper corner)(pic #4 shows beading). Lacking thumb screw to hold height of screen(pic #6 shows hole where thumb screw would have went). Middle inner pole is metal and not sure if its original but it does screw into wood threaded upper frame(pic #8). Name of previous own written on back. Not mint but is over 150 years old and has character. Displays beautifully. Overall 20 3/4\" tall. Framed beadwork measures just over 11 1/2\" by 10 1/2\" (frame included in measurement). Shipping total includes insurance and signature confirmation. US only on this one.
