This primitive New Guinea tool came overe here in 1946 when my dad returned from serving in WWII where he flew troop carrier in the South Pacific. It has been in storage in the condition you see in the photos for over 70 years. It definitely was used and is possibly older than 1946. The stone you see in the photo may not be original to this tool, but it was with it in the box and, I believe it might also have come from there.It does not fit in the space at the end where the cord would wrap around it to keep it in place. However, it is a primitive axe-type stone and is smoothed and tapered on one side into a blade. (See close up with zoom.) Therefore, I am including it with the tool as an object of interest, even if it is not original to the axe.
The handle measures 21 inches. The length across the top is about 19 inches. Some of the fibers that are woven around the tool are loosening or have come loose. The wood needs to be cleaned of what looks like water spots. I did not choose to do this as I believe the less done, the better. So I leave that to the care of the new owner.
