This is an antique mid 19th century oil on canvas depicting Ruth from the Bible, shown picking up bits of wheat from a field. There are stacks of wheat in the back groundalong with crows that are eating leftover bits as well. This is quite a large and impressive painting, it measures 25\" x 30\" and the frame is 30 3/4\" x 35 3/4\". I have attributed this to the school of John Gadsby Chapman, an American artist of the 19th century who lived and painted in NY and Italy and spent time in Virginia as well. He was known for doing scenes of Italianpeasant women and children, as well asBiblical scenes. This painting is unsigned. It is very dirty and needs cleaning and some touch ups.. may need to be relined. There is a small old patch on the back. There is a small test clean circle at the top edge, so you can see it will be brighter with a cleaning. The frame looks original, c1850s-60s, with what look to be morning glories in gesso on the corners. There are some bits of the gesso missing which is typical of these old frames. This is a large and heavy painting.
