The Akron Civic Theatre opened its doors April 20, 1929 as the Akron Loew\'s Theatre. Designed by Viennese architect, John Eberson, to resemble a Moorish garden at midnight, it features Spanish decor of medieval carvings, authentic antiques, alabaster sculptures, and is complete with floating clouds and twinkling stars. The Mighty Wurlitzer organ, seen in the foreground, originally installed to accompany silent films, rises from the orchestra pit on a hydraulic lift. The theater is one of only a few remaining atmospheric theaters, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is fondly referred to as
The Jewel on Main Street.\"/
