Robert Sidney Smith (February 13, 1877 – October 20, 1935), known as SidneySmith, was the creator of the influential comic strip, The Gumps,based on an idea by Captain Joseph M. Patterson, editor and publisher ofthe Chicago Tribune.

He was born in Bloomington, Illinois. The son of a dentist,Smith never finished high school and began drawing cartoons for his hometownnewspaper when he was 18. He also worked in newspaper art departments in Indiana,Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The last Old DocYak ended February 10, 1917 with the well-dressed Yak and his familyleaving their house, wondering who might next move into it. The last panelshowed only the empty house. On February 12, 1917, in the space formerlyoccupied by Old Doc Yak, newspapers displayed the initial episodes of TheGumps, showing them moving into the same house.

SidneySmith The Gumps Comic Strip Original Art(Chicago Tribune, 1918-35). This strip is dated “Thursday, Aug 15th”,and it’s from 1918. The art is done in inkand graphite on Bristol board. The image area measures 21\" x 5.75\".Overall yellowing and dingy, and both corners on the left have broken off and havebeen reattached by tape on the back, but still in Good condition. It looksgreat for the time frame. It most likely was done in 1918, due to the single panelrules and Sidney Smith’s signature from that time period.
