GENERAL INFORMATION

Silver Street Inc. madeinnovative, high-quality guitars in Elkhart, IN and Shelby, MI from 1979 to1985. The company’s models included the TAXI, Spitfire, Cobra, MX, Nightwing,Tommy Shaw and Elite.

The TAXI was the firstSilver Street model. Designed by company founder Bruce Hardy, its innovativedesign was granted a U.S. patent. Notable players included Michael Stanley-TheMichael Stanley Band, Chris Hayes-Huey Lewis and the News, Mike Reno-Loverboy,Paul Warren-Prism, Craig Chaquico-Jefferson Starship and Rick Springfield.

My online resource and fansite SilverStreetGuitars.com contains a wealth of information about theimaginative Silver Street line, including dozens of interesting photos. Today,30 years after production ended, these guitars are quite rare and verycollectible.

DESCRIPTION

From my Silver Street collection, I am offering a lovely,small-bodied TAXI model. It is a full-scale, compact, lightweight instrumentmade in limited quantities over 30 years ago.

The TAXI model specifications include a 24 3/4 inchfull-scale neck, 22 frets, 1 11/16 inch nut width, brass nut (early examplesonly), 2 3/32 inch bridge string spacing, rosewood fretboard with pearl dotmarkers, maple body, bolt-on neck, one or two Dimarzio pickups, Schallerbridge, Gotoh tuners and Bourns control pots. The body is 12 inches long, 7 1/4inches wide and 2 1/8 inches thick. The overall length is 33 1/2 inches and theweight is only 6 pounds.

This TAXI is red with one pickup. The serial numberT-44 indicates that it is one of the earlier ones produced. The serial numberis found in the neck pocket and the production date of March 24, 1982 is foundon the rear of the truss-rod cover. The original custom-fit, hard-shell case isincluded.

Cosmetically, this TAXI is in much better thanaverage condition for a guitar that is 30+ years old. The finish is originaland very presentable. It has the usual, but very minor, signs of use and wear including a few small finish chips.There is light finish checking but, surprisingly, there is no buckle rash. Pleaseexamine the photos carefully and feel free to ask questions.

Operationally, this TAXI is excellent with greatplayability and no issues. The volume and tone controls and the three-waypickup-phase selector switch work properly with no noise. The frets andfretboard are in excellent plus condition. The tuners work smoothly with noslack or slippage. The action is very good, but the buyer may want to adjust itto suit personal preference. The intonation is great and the bridge is fullyadjustable. It has recent 9-42 strings.

The original branded hard-shell case is includedand is in amazingly nice condition for its age.
