Description:

On offer is a fully cleaned, serviced and working (with 1 year guarantee) solid sterling silver cased Victorian fusee table roller lever pocket watch with start/stop lever by J Johnson, Liverpool 1851 with key. Has a couple of problems.

The flat dial is white enamel with Roman numerals and a subsidiary seconds, the dial is mounted via a dial plate. The hands are gold.

The sterling silver double bottomed case bears the Birmingham hallmarks for 1851 (upper case C). The rear was engine turned with a blank disc in the middle. The maker\'s initials RS are probably Richard Swann, 76 Hospital Street, Birmingham. The rear cover opens via the lug to the right of the pendant.

The movement is a key wound (key supplied) English full plate fusee table roller lever. It is wound from the rear, the hands are set from the front. It has a polished steel three armed balance. Regulation is via a Bosley type. The fusee has maintaining power. It has a ruby end stone. The jewelling is \'Liverpool\'.

There is a start/stop lever which stops the whole train and is used to accurately set the time to a church or town clock.

This is a fair example of an interesting early Victorian sterling silver cased English fusee lever pocket watch in fair over all condition. The front bezel hinge is damaged and the canon pinion is worn so it is a bit tricky setting the hands but does work. Minute hand a little losse.

  • Movement condition: good, the gilding is very bright with a couple of scratches. It is complete with its original dust cap.
  • The balance, lever pallets, lever, escape, fourth, third and fusee are jewelled (17 jewels).
  • Dial condition: perfect.
  • Case condition: poor, the engine turning is all but worn away, there are a number of small dents on the rear but no scratches. The coin edge is also worn. The front bezel hinge is damaged but it does still snaps shut as it should do. The rear cover snaps shut as it should.
  • Crystal: acrylic, replacement very light pocket wear.
  • It runs well to the end of the chain (greater than 30 hours) and keeps good time. The start/stop lever works.
  • Size: 50mm (1.98 inches) in diameter and 17mm (0.69 inches) thick.
  • Weight: 110g (3.90 oz).
