You are offerding on a huge original antique print from an 1880s illustrated journal.

It depicts frightened townsfolk running out of buildings during the Great 1886 Charleston Earthquake. On the backside of the print are two full pages of picutres of the aftermath and refugee efforts.

The 1886 Charleston earthquake occurred about 9:50 p.m. August 31 with an estimated moment magnitude of 6.9–7.3 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme). The intraplate earthquake caused 60 deaths and between $5 million and $6 million in damage to 2,000 buildings in the SouthEastern United States. It is one of the most powerful and damaging earthquakes to hit the East Coast of the United States. Very little to no historical earthquake activity had occurred, which is unusual for any seismic area. The shock was felt as far away as Boston, Massachusetts, to the north, Chicago, Illinois, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to the northwest, as far as New Orleans, Louisiana, to the west, as far as Cuba to the south, and as far as Bermuda to the east. It was so severe that outside the immediate area, there was speculation that the Florida peninsula had broken away from North America.

It is very large (double folio size), measuring approximately22 x 16 inches (56 x 40.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below. There back side of the print has illustrations of the earthquake.

The print has a fold in the middle, where it was folded into the magazine long ago. There are several small holes along the fold line from where this oversized print was sewn into the binding of the magazine. The largest is in the skirt of the centralrunning woman., See scan for an accurate view of the condition.

This is GENUINE antique/vintage item. It is not a modern reproduction.
