Soviet Lenin Canal Badge, circa late 1950s- 1960sissue.

The badge is brass andhigh quality “hot-baked” enamel, VERY NICELY MADE, of typical 1950s-60s quality!Measures 21.7 mm by 18.7mm. There is an inscription ““Canal Named after V.I.Lenin”.

The badge is in GREATCONDITION! There is only light surface wear to enamel, no chips, flakes orother noticeable damage. The pinattachment is intact and sound.

This badge was given topassengers – mostly foreigners - of one of the Volga River cruise boats whotraveled via the Lenin Canal. Little did these passengers know, the canal hadbeen built from mid 1940s with a large contribution by hundreds of thousands“canal soldiers” (prison laborers). About half of this number were German POWsand the other half Soviet prisoners, many of them political.Thousands had died due to the nearly meager rationsand terrible labor conditions while digging the canal, which in 1952 connectedthe Volga and the Don River.
