Spectacular looking rare & superb large 1789-1805 ADAMS Georgian stoneware jug:
$359.99

We are listing this simply stunning huge superbly sprigged very rarely seen 1789-1805 Georgian very dark brown (almost black) glazed white stoneware classical jug by the great English potter William Adams I. The jug is impressed on the bottom of its base rim with the ADAMS mark used by William Adams I from 1789 until his death in 1805. Although John Turner is undoubtedly the Georgian potter best known for white bodied stoneware (and virtually all the pieces you see now are his), Adams produced a smaller number of pieces that were just as superbly and interestingly sprigged as Turner\'s. This jug is a perfect example of the quality and detail of Adams\' work, including a pair of very striking classical sprigs on its body that rival anything found on Turner and Wedgwood pieces of the period, and in fact Turner had previously used these same sprigs in the 1790s. One of the scenes features three delightful children or cherubs playacting as classical gods and goddesses, and the other features four fantastic cherubs playing with a goat. You can see another Adams jug (although it is unmarked) sprigged with these two classical scenes (from the Jack Hacking Collection) on page 308-309 of the reference book on the history of the Adams firm, ADAMS CERAMICS Staffordshire Potters and Pots 1779-1998, and the book also notes on page 306 that Adams\' \"early stoneware occasionally appears for sale in Britain or the United States but one is more likely to see an example of it in a museum.\" The listed jug also has very realistic tree sprigs on either side of Adams\' rustic version of a stylized acanthus leaf handle, has very striking dark brown (almost black) glazing on its neck, upper handle, and base rim, features a sprigged band of leafy trim below its neck, and scalloped engine turning above its base. It is a quite large - 9.5 inches tall, 8.75 inches at its widest point - superbly glazed and sprigged, makes a truly stunning display piece, and it is in very good condition (there is an extremely tiny flake out of the bottom of the brown glaze at the bottom of one side of the neck). Adams\' works can be found in many of the great museums and personal collections around the world, and this is a most impressive example of both his creativity and his attention to detail. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself. A spectacular looking very rarely seen Adams jug.
