Please Scroll Below for Larger This exceedingly rare originally hand-colored lithograph is from Johann Spix\'s Avium Species Novae quas in Itinere Annis 1817-1820 per Brasiliam…. The work was published in 1839 by Monachi in Germany.

Johann Baptist Ritter von Spix was a German biologist who went on an expedition to Brazil with Karl Friedrich Philipp Martius. He brought large varieties of flora and fauna specimens back to Munich and helped create a portion of the National Zoological Collection. Spix was appointed by King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria as student or \"Eleve\" of Zoology where he was sent to learn scientific practices from Georges Cuvier and others in Paris.

Spix and Martius collected and described animals, plants, and anything of scientific and economic interest on their voyage to Brazil. Good fortune, they wrote, “attended all our collections of natural history, which, though exposed to innumerable hazards and dangers, have all, without exception, reached their final destination, a success which few travelers can boast” (ioffer., vol. 1, 299). The pair collected 350 bird species, 85 mammals, 116 fish, 2700 insects, and 6500 plants many of which were previously unknown to science.
