Once more the time has come round for us to run our Christmas sales. Good views have all but disappeared from the market but this year we have some of the rarest views you are ever likely to see. Not all the views are valuable, some we have included simply because we liked them. Please enjoy the sales and have a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

For an overview of all the sales, please click HERE.

We have quite a wide range of views this time; as well as the old favorites - Ogle and Edge, Frith, Bedford, etc. We have a good selection of early Crystal Palace views (including T.R. Williams), some good genre and some VERY rare views at the end of each day.

This sale is for a Stanley Morrow view of Red Cloud, Oglala Dakota, at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, December 1876. This is Morrow Indian Series # 119 "Red Cloud, the notorious chief of the Ogalallah Sioux". According to Frank Goodyear, "When Morrow returned to Fort Robinson in December he secured an individual portrait of the famous chief. Dressed in a heavy overcoat and holding a hat, Red Cloud stands in front of a log building. In a letter published in a local Dakota newspaper not long after his return from this trip, Morrow wrote about this encounter: "He seems to take his disposition rather hard, but claims that it will make no difference to his people". Through the kindness of the Indian trader, Mr Dear, I was enabled to procure some good negatives of Red Cloud, today, it being the first time he ever gave a setting to a photographer." (Dakota News: Yankton Daily Press and Dakotaian December 15, 1876). Morrow was not the last photographer to make this inaccurate claim. Paul Hedron, in writing about Red Cloud\'s disposition in regards to the Sioux War of 1867, notes that the "ultimate humiliation of the Red Cloud Agency Sioux came on October 23-24 1867 when General Crook and his army surrounded and seized all ponies and firearms of the Red Cloud and Red Leaf bands of Sioux, although neither group had openly participated in the summer\'s hostilities". On October 24 Morrow photographed the ordination of Spotted Tail as chief of all the Sioux at Red Cloud agency. Red Cloud was in attendance. Photographic Gems of the Great North-West; Yankton; caption: "Red Cloud. Chief of the Ogallallas. Lass image p. 60, text p. 59: Says Morrow photographed him at Red Cloud Agency. Unlocated Morrow letter December 8, 1876 from Red Cloud Agency, thus close to when photo made. Goodyear plate p. 32; caption: Red Cloud, 1876. Text p. 33. Fort Robinson, Nebraska, December 1876.

This is a cabinet sized view (7 inches by 4.5 inches) which will fit nicely into a Holmes-Bates viewer but will NOT fit into an enclosed Brewster viewer.

We have a lot of important information about the collection of Morrow views which we are offering (please see our overview for them all). Please click HERE for a large image, provenance of the collection and notes on the photographer.
