Large, heavy Edwardian sterling silver goblet hallmarked Chester 1907 by Fattorini & Sons, Bradford and engraved in 1908 as an agricultural trophy. The superb engraving within a floral cartouche reads \"HEBDEN BRIDGE & CALDER VALLEY AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY. PRESENTED BY W.A. SIMPSON- HINCHCLIFFE ESQ. FOR THE BEST LOCAL HEAVY WEIGHT HORSE 1908\". The second cartouche remains blank. The trophy comes complete with its original ebonised wooden plinth inexcellentcondition.
Silver Trophy: Weight: 422.0 gm. Height: 265 mm / 10.5 inches. Diameter of rim: 120 mm / 4.75 inches. Diameter of base: 105 mm / 4.25 inches.
Wooden Plinth: Weight: 496.7 gm. Height: 70 mm / 2.75 inches. Diameter of rim: 95 mm / 3.75 inches. Diameter of base: 160 mm / 6.25 inches.
Hebden Bridge: A market town in West Yorkshire, England in the Upper Calder Valley. It is situated 8 miles west of Halifax and 14 miles north east of Rochdale at the confluence of the River Calder and Hebden Water.
Hebden Bridge & Calder Valley Agricultural Society: My research indicates the annual agricultural show commenced in Hebden Bridge in 1902 so this silver trophy cup would have been presented at the 6th show, a very early trophy.
William Algernon Simpson-Hinchcliffe (1880 - 1963): The person presenting the trophy and who in all likelihood would have provided the trophy cam from a family of local mill owners. He lived at New Crag Hall which was built for him and hide wife Helen in 1904 in Cragg Vale in the Calder Valley. He seems to have been a bit of a character and lived a playboy lifestyle.
Summary: This is a very large, heavy and impressive trophy goblet and as can be seen from the photos this is a very attractive and collectable item. Good luck!
