The Gorham \"Buttercup\" is a 115 year old pattern that was first made in 1899. Inside is old Gorham \'Lion, anchor, G\' hallmark and \'Pat. 1900\' (photo #5, #6 & #8). To get a \'balanced\' ring (with all hallmarks intact) this ring was made from a demitasse spoon.

Brief History of Gorham SilverGorham silver was founded in Providence, Rhode Island in the year of 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman, in partnership with Henry L. Webster. The firms chief product was silver spoons although they also made thimbles, combs, jewelry, and other small items.During the heyday of American silver manufacturing, approximately 1850-1940, Gorham was highly influential. The White House has used Gorham silver services during many administrations. Mary Todd Lincoln purchased an impressive tea and flatware service for use in the White House in 1859. The tea service was presented to the National Museum of American History in 1957. Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant asked Gorham to commemorate the country’s one-hundredth anniversary in 1875 with a spectacular Century Vase that contained over 2,000 ounces of sterling silver. Among Gorhams major trophy commissions are the America’s Cup for yachting, the Davis Cup for tennis and the Borg-Warner Trophy for the Indianapolis 500.The History of Spoon RingsSpoon rings are believed to have originated in England in the 1600’s. The story is that servants that couldn\'t afford a “real” wedding ring would steal a silver spoon from their master and have it crafted into a ring. For a poor person a stolen spoon was to best, and easiest, way to give the woman they loved a beautiful ring.As the practice spread more and more silverware \'went missing\' but since spoons were usually monogrammed, and newlyweds on staff were known to all, it wasn\'t hard to find the culprit and what was left of the spoon. Many arrests were made from the 17th to the 19th century with offenses ranging from “stealing a silver spoon” to “larceny by a servant.” Criminal records allowed historians to determine when spoon rings began.By the 19th century Spoon Ring popularity waned but then it took off again during the 60\'s and 70\'s.
