Superb 1777 English Georgian Sterling Silver Pierced Cake/Bread Basket

Presented is a fabulous English Georgian sterling silver cake or bread basket. This piece was made by Charles Aldridge & Henry Green, and dates to 1777. The sides of the basket are ornately pierced with bands of different openwork designs: Greek key, floral swag, bar and dot, with finely hand engraved detailing. The basket has a beaded rim, with this beaded design repeated on the foot and on the swing handle. The center of the interior of the basket has a nicely engraved crest of a demi griffon rampant. The underside has a presentation reading \'John King from Wilson and Gwendolen Crewdson, 1793.\'

This piece is in excellent condition, especially considering its age. There are no splits, no breaks, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs.

This piece is hallmarked on the side above the base with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard\'s head crowned for the city of London, the date letter b for 1777, and the maker\'s mark for Charles Aldridge & Henry Green.

The basket measures about 13 3/4 by 11 by 3 5/8 inches, or 10 3/4 inches with the handle raised.

This piece weighs 958 grams or 33.8 regular ounces.
