Superb 1778-1784 Hester Bateman Georgian bright cut sterling silver sugar tongs:

We are listing these superbly decorated 1778-1784 monogrammed Georgian bright cut sterling silver sugar tongs by the world renowned female London silversmith Hester Bateman (arguably the best known silversmith of all time). The tongs are gently flared and very nicely decorated (with wonderful nippled acorn bowls), they are incised on the outside of their bow with a very fancy S*H monogram (unusually there is also a small cursive letter incised on the side of one arm near the bow - see the last picture), and they are marked inside one arm with a lion passant, and inside the other arm with the instantly recognizable cursive HB maker\'s mark. This mark was registered in 1778 by London silversmith Hester Bateman (see page 78 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). The tongs are over 5.25 inches long, weigh 1.1 ounces, they are beautifully decorated and monogrammed (with an unusual additional monogram as well), and they are in very good condition. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the tongs have not been professionally polished).
