Margaret (Peggy) Davies

Margaret Davies was born in Burslem a stones throw from the Royal Doulton Burslem works.She suffered from tuberculosis as a young girl and spent much of her young life in hospitals.As a result she fell behind with her schoolwork but a teacher spotted her artistic talent and was happy to let her concentrate on this instead of her more academic studies.At the age twelve Margaret (Peggy) Davies won a scholarship to the Burslem College of Art where she studied full time for several years under the tutolage of Gordon Forsyth.Family circumstances forced her to seek employment before her course ended and she found a part time assistants position with a local ceramic designer calledClarice Cliff.

In 1939, she took a position with Royal Doulton as assistant to Cecil Noke, son of the renownedCharles Noke, butthe Second World War interrupted her employment with Doulton when a bomb partly destroyed her home and she decided to join the war effort and become a nurse.After the war Margaret (Peggy) Davies worked freelance under contract to Royal Doulton and produced a steady stream of figure models for the Doulton HN series.

She invested an enormous amount of time and work in making sure the various costumes were realistic and historically accurate.The versatility of Margaret Davies is well renowned her figurines have portrayed all periods of fashion from medieval to modern times.In addition to her artistic career, Margaret Davies was a devoted wife and mother and she brought up three sons who often posed for her child figures as did her husband and father.Margaret Davies died in 1999.

Probably the best-known and mostperformed comedy balletin the world. Arthur Saint-LeonandCharles Nuitterbased the ballet onE.T.A. Hoffmann\'s1816fairytaleDer Sandmann(The Sandman).Leo Delibeswrote the music. Arthur Saint-Leonchoreographedthe ballet.

The ballet is set in a Polish village long ago. Swanhilda and Frantz are sweethearts. Swanhilda thinks Frantz is in love with Coppelia, a strange girl in the house of a dollmaker named Dr. Coppelius. Swanhilda discovers Coppelia is a doll. Dr. Coppelius tries to bring the doll to life using Frantz\'s life force. Swanhilda saves her sweetheart\'s life, and the two live happily ever after.

Coppeliawas in rehearsal for three years. It had many troubles. One was finding just the right dancer to portray Swanhilda. Sixteen-year-oldGiuseppina Bozzacchiwas finally chosen.Frantz was actually played by a woman in men\'s clothing. The ballet was first performed on 25 May 1870 at theTheatre Imperial de L\'OperainParis.Coppeliawas a great success. Over the years it has been performed around the world.
