Superb HMS “SALMON” Royal Navy Menu Holder Sterling Silver Page of Plymouth 1915:
$239.00

A Superb and Perhaps Unique British Royal Navy Menu or Place Holder for HMS “Salmon” the “R” Class Destroyer of 1916
Made in 1915/6 in Fully Hallmarked Sterling Silver, probably by John William Barrett of Birmingham, for “Page of Plymouth”
In Excellent Virtually Mint Un-used Condition

This is a fine and beyond scarce British Royal Navy ship’s Wardroom Menu or Place Holder featuring the Naval Crown and the ship’s crest of HMS “Salmon” the “R” class destroyer of 1916.

This was made, assayed and hallmarked in Birmingham in 1915/6 probably by the silversmithing firm of John William Barrett, and is stamped for the noted firm of silversmiths and retailers Messrs. Page, Keen and Page, or “Page of Plymouth” noted for their naval specialties.

This is finely modeled with exceptional detail, the fish particularly well executed, and is in excellent virtually mint, un-used condition.

It seems likely it was a unique sample piece, and never sold or used, as the Great War swept away the traditional custom of small wardroom silver items being presented to the ship by officers on transfer.
Note also that it is un-engraved.

A FINE AND PERHAPS UNIQUE ROYAL NAVY SHIP’S MENU HOLDER
AND
A FINE ADDITION TO ANY COLLECTION

You are offerding on ONE menu holder – a similar piece for HMS “KING EDWARD VII” MAY be available.

SEE THE PICTURES AND DETAILS BELOW

This Menu Holder is a fine solid piece measuring one and a quarter inches wide (1.25 ins / 3.5 cms) and almost an inch and a half high (1.4 ins / 3.75 cms) and weighing nearly an ounce of silver (0.9 ozs / 24 gms).

It is correctly hallmarked as shown above, with the anchor town mark for Birmingham, the lion passant guarantee mark for English sterling silver, and the date letter “r” for 1915/6.
The maker’s mark has been obscured, but shows traces of the three diamonds cartouche of John William Barrett as makers, known to supply Messrs. Page, Keen and Page of Plymouth, Devon.
It is also stamped “PAGE” and “PLYMOUTH”.

See John Culme \"The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914, Volume I pages 354 and 355 for a description and history of this firm, “Page of Plymouth” noted for their naval accessories.
