Do to its size, this MERE was probably created for ceremonial purposes, as a symbol of power and authority.
Meres typically average 14\" in length.
Larger Meres are rare due to the difficulty of finding a single high quality piece of unblemished nephrite, suitable for fashioning the finished piece. Further, larger pieces are much more difficult and time consuming to finish.

BACKGROUND
These nephrite or greenstone Meres were considered sacred objects reserved for New Zealand’s indigenous Maori chiefs or nobility.
The greenstone, or pounamu, chosen for the mere was carefully selected for color and lack of flaws. It was first rough cut with pieces of quartzite combined with sand and water. Finishing the surface was done with fine sandstone a very hard smooth stone.
The Mere is a leaf-shaped form of a short club. It was used as a close-range striking weapon for end-on thrusting, jabbing or striking. Targets were the ribs, neck, temple or skull. The butt could also be used it very close range to strike the head.
