This is an exquisite big antique Victorian circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate brooch. The construction is fabulous and the choice of Scottish gemstones exceptional ( all different ) with some very high quality stones including one VERY rare section of plume agate.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The stunning stones are classic orange jasper from the Campsie Fells in Stirlingshire, exceptionally rare pink and gold plume agate from Burn Anne in Ayrshire, green and red speckled bloodstone from the Isle of Rum, grey banded Montrose agate, green moss agate from Balmerino in north Fife and finally a lovely section of cream speckled agate from Luthrie in Fife.
The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces of this period, but has been fully tested and is sterling silver. The width large at 4.8 cm (Just under two inches ) and the C clasp and pin are in good working condition and original as is the loop on the back to fit a safety chain if required.
