This is a superb quality antique Victorian circa 1890 sterling silver Scottish agate brooch. The brooch has an exquisite high quality selection of Scottish gemstones all in beautiful condition.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The stunning stones are grey and white banded agates from Montrose in Angus, green and red speckled bloodstones from the Isle of Rum, rare gold and red moss agates from Burn Anne in Ayrshire and fabulous flame pink agates from near Luthrie in Fife.
The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for pieces from this period but has been fully tested by a local jeweller and is sterling silver.The width is large at 4.5 cm ( One and four fifth inches ) and the pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original as is the loop on the back to fit a safety chain if required.
