Every now and then I come across a truly fantastic piece of Scottish jewellery and this is has to be one of those pieces!. The design and construction is incredible with wonderful combination of Scottish gemstones, all in beautiful condition, the finest blue enamel work and very best silversmith work you will ever see in these pieces. The piece is huge and will come in it\'s original fitted box as shown. The box needs repair along the back edge but apart from this the whole piece is in exquisite condition.
I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found.
The stones are all stunning with a mixture of cabochon citrines from the Cairngorm mountain range, facetted Sutherland amethysts from the Sutherland hills as thistle plumes and tiny exquisite garnet cabochons around the brooch rim from Elie in Fife. All the stones have been fully tested by a local jeweller and are genuine.
The brooch has a fabulous sterling silver frame that has the Edinburgh family jeweller Crichton stamp and Edinr ( Edinburgh ) along with the thistle for sterling silver and Queen Victorias head duty stamp, that shows the duty was fully paid on this piece and it was made before 1890. The brooch has a clear diamond registration stamp on the back with letter G dating the design to 1863.The silver cast work is incredible with thistles on the bottom and garland on the top. The top section has a plain ribbon cartouche with nothing engraved so just waiting for your family motto or name to be inscribed!. The thistle bottom also has a beautiful Scottish crown and saltire cross in blue enamel matching the Celtic enamel work.
The length is huge at 8.5 cm ( Three and two fifth inches ) with width fully 6 cm ( Two and two fifth inches ) and the pin and C clasp are original and in excellent working condition. The brooch also has an original loop on the back to fit a safety chain and pin if required and it will come in the original fitted box as shown.In summary this is one the THE VERY finest Scottish antique brooches I have ever listed on E Bay and was made to an extremely high standard by one of Edinburghs finest family jewellers around 1863. The combination of design, stones, enamel and construction makes it a very special piece and would be the crowning jewel of most Scottish collections!
