Superb late 1700s Mortlake Georgian stoneware jug with 1827 sterling silver lid :
$74.99

We are listing this superb little late 1700s Mortlake Georgian sprigged salt glaze stoneware jug which has been made into a mustard pot with the addition of an 1827 sterling silver rim and domed lid by the Sheffield silversmiths J. & T. Settle Gunn & Co. One side of the silver rim and the silver lid are both marked with a lion passant, a duty mark facing right, the date letter d with a crown above it (used for small articles in 1827-1828 in Sheffield), and an I*S over T*S maker\'s mark. This mark was registered in 1825 by Sheffield silversmiths J. & T. Settle Gunn & Co. (see page 444 of Jackson\'s Silver & Gold Marks). Although the jug is unmarked (typical of old salt glaze) it features a very early folded and smeared handle terminal which is seen on late 1700s jugs from Mortlake (see page 223 of Ivor Noel Hume\'s authoritative article on brown jug sprigs in the 2004 Ceramics in America). The jug also has an early Mortlake windmill sprig (page 234 of the Hume article), three tree sprigs, and a central Toby Philpot sprig. With its lid and thumbplate the piece is over 3.5 inches tall, 3.5 inches at its widest point, very nicely sprigged, has a superb fully hallmarked sterling silver rim and domed lid, and it is in very good condition. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the silver rim and lid have not been professionally polished). A very early Mortlake jug with a superb sterling silver top.
