Two absolutely delightful pictures which depict loveable mischievous black and white cats. The first drawing shows a cat taking flight with the inscription \"Dog Coming\". The second drawing shows a cat holding a lobster, by the coast, possibly both are a depiction of Peter.

Provenance ...

These framed ink sketches were purchased by the vendor from the descendants of one of the elderly, Mr. Wain\'s nurses, Mrs. Blinkhorn. The paper of each anthropomorphised cat sketch was taken from the then Mrs. Blinkhorn\'s day books.

Please take time to look at all 12 photos to fully appreciate just what these are !!

A rare opportunity to own two exquisite, original, late commissioned, Louis Wain pen and ink drawings in fabulous original condition. There\'s plenty of Louis Wain prints for sale but you try and find two original works of art with provenance by Louis Wain.

Two truly magnificent Louis Wain pictures of superb quality. The beautifulpictures and theworkmanship are simply exquisite.I\'m afraid my photos aren\'t doing these magnificent pen and ink drawings truejustice because thelight reflection is hindering the exquisite visual appeal of these spectacular pictures. In real life, the pictures are a lot crisper. Whoever purchases this pictures will certainly not be disappointed because they\'re undoubtedly two stunning works of art, some of the best we\'ve seen.

We have removed this pen and ink drawings from their frame, cleaned, checked and authenticated that these drawings are completely genuine and that the paper definitely does date from the correct era, circa late 1930s, and as you can just see, the pictures also do have a very minute amount of discolouration/ foxing, commensurate with 80 years of age, but nothing unusual.

Louis Wain (5 August 1860 – 4 July 1939)

An English artistbest known for his drawings, which consistently featured anthropomorphisedlarge-eyed catsand kittens.Louis William Wain was born inClerkenwellinLondon. His father was a textile trader and embroiderer; his mother was French. He was the first of six children and the only male child.

Louis Wain studied at the West London School of Art and eventually became a teacher there for a short period. At the age of 20, Wain was left to support his mother and his five sisters after his father\'s death.Wain soon quit his teaching position to become a freelance artist, and in this role, he achieved substantial success. He worked for several journals including theIllustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, and theIllustrated London News.

At the age of 23, Louis Wain married his sisters\'governess, Emily Richardson, who was ten years his senior (which was considered quite scandalous at the time) and moved with her toHamsteadin north London. Emily soon began to suffer from cancer and died three years into their marriage. Prior to Emily\'s death, Louis Wain discovered the subject that would define his career. During her illness, Emily was comforted by their pet cat Peter, a stray white/black kitten they had rescued after hearing him mewing in the rain one night. Emily\'s spirits were greatly lifted by Peter, and Louis began to draw extensive sketches of him, which Emily strongly encouraged him to have published. She died before this happened, but he continued to make cat sketches. He later wrote of Peter, \"To him, properly, belongs the foundation of my career, the developments of my initial efforts, and the establishing of my work.\" Peter can be recognised in many of Louis Wain\'s early published works.

H.G.Wellssaid of him, \"He has made the cat his own. He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look and live like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves.\"Louis Wain\'s original artwork has now become highly prized and collected the world over.
