This is a fabulous quality antique Victorian HM 1889 sterling silver Scottish brooch made by a renowned silversmith Robert & Henry Bruce Kirkwood in Edinburgh. The company was formed in 1882 and was in existence until around 1900. This is a high quality heavy piece with wonderful original clasp and pin and exquisite casting and engraving work on the front.
The brooch has a full set of clear hallmarks on the back with the castle for Edinburgh assay office, the thistle for sterling silver, makers R&HBK and date letter stamp h for 1889.
The length of the brooch is 4.3 cm (One and three quarter inches ) and the superb pin and clasp are original and in good working condition. The brooch has a loop on the back to fit a safety chain if required.
