I buy vintage linens at local estate sales to pass them along to you, and I was lucky enough to find a lifetime collection of tapestries.This is a very antique tapestry. It measures 52\" long by 39\" high, and there is an additional 5.5\" of fabric turned under at each side. This is a woven piece with alternating stripes of black/purple with tan/gold feather patterns 3.25\" wide with two different patterns of tan/gold stripes. These light stripes feature Japanoise patterns: a narrow band with pale orange fruits and leaves (1.5\"), and a wider 5\" band with orange, green and brown patterns that show a Japanese man and a pagoda with complex green foliage. Based on this, I am going out on a limb and guessing that this dates to the 1880s or so, when Japanese art and motifs were all the rage in France. Please note that these bands are all woven together, not attached by sewing together; it is one continuous tapestry piece. I have included a photo of the back so you can see the weaving. At the top edge there is a 1\" band of gorgeous woven patterned metallic trim. Please use the zoom function to check all the details.This is in good condition, with an antique appearance. I did note some damage: the metallic trim at the top is coming loose on one corner, as shown, and I think there is some fading - when you compare the folded-back portion that has not been exposed to light, it is a bit darker than the front. Even with these issues, this is a most attractive and unique antique tapestry.
